Understanding OCD
OCD is more than being organized or particular
OCD involves unwanted thoughts, images, impulses, or doubts (obsessions) and responses intended to reduce distress or find certainty (compulsions). Compulsions aren’t always visible. They may involve analyzing, checking memories, seeking reassurance, mentally reviewing events, or avoiding situations that trigger uncertainty.
Intrusive thoughts and doubt
Distressing concerns about harm, relationships, contamination, morality, identity, making mistakes, or other personally meaningful topics.
Visible or mental rituals
Checking, repeating, researching, reassurance seeking, rumination, reviewing, counting, or trying to feel completely certain.
Avoidance and disruption
Pulling away from activities, relationships, academic work, or valued opportunities because OCD makes them feel risky or overwhelming.
OCD can take many forms. A thorough assessment helps clarify whether OCD or another concern best explains your experience.
Treatment approaches
Evidence-based care tailored to you
Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP)
ERP helps you gradually engage with situations, thoughts, and feelings that OCD has taught you to fear, while practicing new responses instead of relying on compulsions. Treatment is collaborative, paced thoughtfully, and connected to your goals.
Inference-Based CBT (I-CBT)
I-CBT explores how obsessive doubt develops and how people become drawn away from what they know through direct experience into imagined possibilities. The work focuses on recognizing and changing the reasoning process that gives OCD doubt its power.
CBT and ACT
Cognitive behavioral and acceptance-based strategies can support greater flexibility, willingness to experience uncertainty, and action guided by personal values instead of OCD’s demands.
Individualized treatment planning
We’ll discuss the ways OCD affects your life, review relevant treatment options, and develop a collaborative plan. Not every strategy is appropriate for every client, and treatment is adjusted to your needs.
Who I work with
OCD treatment for students, athletes, and adults
I work with adolescents, college students, student-athletes, and adults whose lives are affected by OCD and related anxiety concerns. You don’t need to have a formal OCD diagnosis before contacting me to discuss an assessment.
For athletes and high-achieving students, OCD may overlap with pressure to perform, perfectionism, rigid routines, fear of mistakes, and the need to feel certain. Treatment addresses OCD rather than assuming every performance-related challenge is OCD.
Common areas of impact
- Academics, studying, and decision-making
- Athletic routines and performance pressure
- Relationships, family life, and social situations
- Transitions, independence, and identity
- Time lost to rituals, checking, or rumination
- Avoidance and difficulty pursuing valued goals

Why work with an OCD-focused counselor?
I am a licensed clinical mental health counselor with extensive experience treating OCD and anxiety disorders in outpatient and residential settings. My training includes the International OCD Foundation’s Behavioral Therapy Training Institute basic and advanced forums, CBT training through the Beck Institute, and I-CBT training through the OCD Training School. I have used CBT, ERP, and ACT in clinical practice for years.
My approach is collaborative, respectful, and practical. We will work to understand your particular OCD patterns and identify meaningful goals beyond symptom management.

Frequently asked questions
Questions about OCD treatment
Do I need an OCD diagnosis to reach out?
No. If intrusive thoughts, repetitive doubt, compulsions, or avoidance are interfering with life, we can discuss whether an assessment or OCD-focused treatment may be appropriate.
What is the difference between ERP and I-CBT?
ERP emphasizes changing how you respond to OCD triggers and compulsive urges. I-CBT focuses on the reasoning process through which obsessive doubt arises. Both are structured approaches; which methods fit your needs is determined collaboratively.
Can college students receive OCD therapy near Dartmouth?
Yes. My downtown Hanover office is within walking distance of Dartmouth College. Eligibility, scheduling, and insurance arrangements can be discussed directly.
Can I meet virtually if I live in Vermont, Massachusetts, Florida, or Colorado?
Potentially, yes. I’m licensed in Vermont and Massachusetts as well as New Hampshire. I also hold a Colorado counseling license and an out-of-state telehealth registration for Florida. Telehealth psychotherapy depends on your physical location during sessions, clinical appropriateness, and current availability.
