Counseling & Mental Performance for High-Performance Coaches
You’re expected to lead, perform, make difficult decisions, and support your athletes—often while managing intense pressure of your own. You deserve a place to focus on your own well-being and growth.
At Treadwell Counseling and Performance, PLLC, I work with individual coaches at the prep school, high school, collegiate, semi-professional, and professional levels who are seeking mental health counseling or mental performance consulting. As a former collegiate head ice hockey coach and licensed clinical mental health counselor, I understand the pressures of high-performance coaching from both the sidelines and the clinical perspective.
In-person counseling in Hanover, New Hampshire. Telehealth psychotherapy for eligible clients physically located in New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Florida, or Colorado, subject to applicable authorization and clinical suitability. Mental performance consulting is a separate, nonclinical service; availability depends on the circumstances and applicable rules.
The person behind the coach
The pressures of high-performance coaching
Coaches are often asked to show steadiness, clarity, and confidence regardless of what’s happening behind the scenes. These challenges can affect coaches at every level, whether you lead a prep school program, coach a high school team, or work in collegiate, semi-professional, or professional sport.
Burnout and chronic stress
Long seasons, recruiting or player development, travel, competition schedules, competing demands, and limited time to rest or recover.
Perfectionism and self-criticism
Feeling that every decision must be right, difficulty letting go of mistakes, and relentless pressure to prove yourself.
Anxiety and uncertainty
Worry about results, evaluations, job security, player selection, roster changes, or difficult conversations.
Identity and life balance
When coaching consumes your sense of self and leaves little room for relationships, health, or personal values.
Leadership under pressure
Staying grounded when emotions run high, decisions are visible, and expectations are competing.
Career transitions
Managing changes in position, moving programs, stepping away from coaching, or adjusting to an unexpected setback.
Two related, distinct services
What kind of support are you looking for?
Some coaches want treatment for a mental health concern. Others are looking to develop skills for more effective and sustainable performance in their role. The distinction matters, and we can discuss which service fits your needs.
Mental Health Counseling for Coaches
Individual psychotherapy for concerns such as anxiety, depression, persistent distress, perfectionism, and difficulties with stress, relationships, or daily functioning.
Depending on your needs, counseling may draw from cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), compassion-focused approaches, and other evidence-based interventions.
Focus: Your mental health, well-being, and functioning as a whole person.
Mental Performance Consulting for Coaches
Individualized, nonclinical support to strengthen how you lead and respond to performance demands. Work may address attention, self-talk, routines, communication, emotional regulation, confidence, and values-based decision-making.
Focus: Developing and applying skills that help you coach effectively and sustainably.
Mental performance consulting is not psychotherapy and does not replace clinical treatment when it is needed.

Leading without losing yourself
Support for the coach you are—and the person you want to be
Coaching can be meaningful work without being your entire identity. Together, we can explore how you relate to pressure, expectations, mistakes, and change, while making more room for the relationships and values that matter outside sport.
The aim is not to eliminate ambition. It is to help you pursue meaningful goals without allowing outcomes to define your worth.
Topics we might explore
- Responding to criticism and setbacks
- Setting boundaries and protecting recovery time
- Managing conflict and hard conversations
- Leading with clarity while remaining flexible
- Building confidence without needing certainty
- Separating self-worth from wins and losses
Experience that connects both worlds
A perspective grounded in competitive athletics
I bring experience as a former NCAA Division I athlete, collegiate ice hockey head coach, and licensed mental health counselor. Although my direct coaching background is primarily in collegiate athletics, I work with the common pressures experienced by individual coaches across high-performance settings. I’ve experienced the demands of building a program, developing team culture, navigating difficult decisions, and supporting athletes.
My approach is collaborative, practical, and grounded in evidence-based clinical and psychological skills. I work with you as an individual—not on behalf of your employer, athletic department, or institution.

Common questions
Questions coaches often have
Do I need a diagnosis to reach out?
No. You can contact me to discuss your concerns and goals. We can determine whether counseling, mental performance consulting, or another resource is the best fit.
Is this only for head coaches?
No. I work with individual coaches at the prep school, high school, collegiate, semi-professional, and professional levels, including assistant and head coaches.
Will my school, club, team, or employer be involved?
These are individual services, not consulting engagements with schools, clubs, teams, or employers. For psychotherapy, confidentiality is governed by applicable law and professional ethics, including relevant exceptions and limits, which we discuss during the intake process.
Can I meet virtually?
Telehealth psychotherapy may be available if you are physically located in a state where I am authorized to practice and remote care is appropriate for your needs. We can discuss the location and scope of mental performance consulting separately.
